Russian Slot Machine and Gambling History

Until the late 1990’s there really wasn’t much to talk of when it comes to slot machine gambling in Russia. The country was in the middle of transition, and many of its residents were extremely poor. The last thing they would do is put their money into a slot machine hoping that it might pay off for them.

However, slowly but surely revenue started to come to Russia and its inhabitants in the form of oil. As the money started coming in, authorities started pushing for economic growth. All of this was happening somewhere around the same time as the state gave up some of their control over their own tourism and turned it over to regional governments to handle on their own.

There was suddenly a boom of slot machines – with roughly a half a million slot machines spread throughout the country. They had close to 70,000 slot machines in 2003, and now they have close to double the number of slot machines in Las Vegas and Atlantic City combined. Everywhere you go you see slot machines, gas stations, clinics, etc. Actual slot machine casinos outnumber the ones in the United States 2:1. It is a $6 billion business, with the majority of it in Moscow. They have 56 slot machine casinos and 5,000 slot machine halls – as well as 56,000 slot machines alone; and that is just what is in the halls. There are another 9,000 slot machines on the streets of Moscow, with the ratio of slot machines to residents just absurd.

It is no wonder that the Duma is looking to decrease the number of slot machines and slot machine casinos and regulate them more closely. With the amount of slot machine gambling, the number of slot machine gambling addicts in Russia is in the hundreds of thousands. The last known record of addicts had them listed as over 300,000 slot machine and gambling addicts.
