South Dakota’s Tribes Looking to Expand Slot Machines

The tribes in South Dakota have been fighting with the government, and in particular, the governor, for years now to get more slot machines as well as more slot machine casinos. They are also looking to expand existing slot machine casinos, but they say the governor will not meet with them. He keeps sending other officials to meet, and the tribes are now considering filing federal lawsuits against him saying that the state is acting in bad faith towards the tribes and their slot machines.

The tribe has considered coming out against the video lottery as a way to get the governor to negotiate new slot machine compacts, but they ultimately have decided to remain neutral on the topic. Governor Rounds said that they are doing everything by the book, and following federal guidelines and legal requirements for what the tribes are asking for (i.e. more casinos, more slot machines).

He said the tribes want him to give them unlimited gaming and unlimited slot machines, and he does not know how that will play out with the other residents of the state right now. He said their constitution says that there will be limited slot machine gaming, and he has to weigh that against their request. He feels certain that there will be an agreement on the slot machines at some point, he just does not know when right now.
