Slot Machine Issue DefeatedIn a surprising turn of events, Issue 3 was defeated at the polls yesterday, and many thought it would pass. The slot machine initiative, that would have legalized slots in Ohio, failed to get the majority vote and did not pass. Rob Walgate, a spokesman for the Ohio Roundtable, was calling it early. With 55% of the precincts reporting, 58% had voted against legalizing slot machines, and 42% voted to approve them. Walgate stated earlier that, “We're winning
59-41 (percent) and we're optimistic. People of Ohio came out
and supported us. We're going to make an announcement to them
soon." Supporters of bringing slot machines in said that the state is losing out on roughly $850 million that would have helped Ohio high school students go to Ohio colleges every year. Michael Caputo, the spokesperson for Ohio Learn and Earn was holding out hope, saying that the race could still turn around. "When it comes down to it, the jury is still out," Caputo said. "One thing you'll notice in the next several hours is this race is going to tighten up. The question we have is if it will tighten enough."
