Slots Stir Trouble

The Learn and Earn campaign to get slot machines into Ohio seems to be getting confused. First there were the commercials for the slot machine measure that said that close to a billion dollars in slot machine revenue would help out college students. Then the chairman of the slot machine initiative came out and said he could not support the claims as to how much slot machine revenue would actually be derived, and wanted to put other ads on the TV saying a different number for that slot machine revenue.

Now, there seems to be some confusion as to what happened in a phone conversation between the pro-slot machine camp and the anti-slot machine camp. A spokesman for the pro-slot machine camp, Michael Caputo, alleged that U.S. Senator George Voinovich had attacked Judge Nathaniel Jones over the slot machine issue. He said that Voinovich had called Jones and “screamed at him” and “threatened him for ‘daring to go on the air.’”

Voinovich is a republican who has been very outspoken about his opposition to the slot machine measure, and Jones has been equally outspoken in his support of bringing slot machines in. However, it turns out that Caputo may have spoken out of turn. Jones said that they had had a pleasant conversation, which goes against what Caputo had said.

Caputo then recanted his story saying, “In my zeal to react to the actions of Sen. Voinovich, I over characterized the conversation that took place between Judge Jones and the senator. Though they disagree on Issue 3, their conversation was courteous and civil."
