The gambling industry looks forward to their annual trade show in Las Vegas, if for no other reason than to see what new slot machines were being offered. Normally people are talking about the celebrities on hand to hawk the slot machine that is named after them, but this week there were catch phrases like "server-based technology," "community gaming," and "sensory immersion."

The slot machine industry wants to make it clear that they know people want more out of their gambling experience than just watching Elvis sing and dance if they win. "The products are the stars this year," said Brian Gamache, Chief Executive of WMS Gaming, one of the big names in slot machine manufacturing.

The new slot machines are going to be more than just something to look at, they will “talk” to each other in a way that makes the casino marketing execs and number people really happy. Some of the slot machines have been able to relate to each other for years now, but what the companies wanted everyone to know, is that the old way of doing business has now changed and slot machines are nothing like what your parents may have played. The million dollar jackpots that come from progressive slot machines is just a drop in the bucket.

If every slot machine in the casino can talk to every other slot machine, and then all of those machines then talk to a central computer, the people who run that computer run every slot machine on the floor – and can change and monitor them at will. Maybe they want to change the minimum bet, or maybe the slot machine in a certain location isn’t working for them – they can change that too.
