Mohegan Sun’s Slot Machines Top $39.3 Million

In one week alone, more than $39 million was pumped into the slot machines at the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. Officials say that since it is the first to open their slot machines they weren’t sure what to expect, so they don’t know if this is good or bad. “We really didn’t know what to expect as the first casino in the Commonwealth,” said Robert Soper, President and CEO of the facility.

Locals think the numbers are outstanding. With $39.3 million coming in, and $35.3 million going out, the slot machines are paying, on average, 90 cents on the dollar. That leaves $4.08 million in the slot machines, which will be divided up across the state – with $1.4 million going to property tax relief, which was the main reason supposedly the slot machines were brought to PA in the first place.

“We’re pleased with the first week, but we’re cautiously optimistic, as we know that the high volumes will smooth out over time as the novelty wears off,” Soper said.

There is also the fact that as they were the first casino in the state, others will be opening their doors and competing for that slot machine revenue. The Mohegan tribe had originally thought that their slot machines would bring in about $230 each day with 2,000 slot machines running. However, they are currently running 1,100 slot machines and bringing in much more than that. The lowest average was on Monday, November 20^th, with the slot machines bringing in $313 each. The highest was on Saturday, November 18^th, with $734 per slot machine.

No matter what the slot machines are bringing in over the original estimates, it is definitely a successful business.
