Church Cautions Government

The Jamaica Association of Evangelicals is urging the government to rethink the idea of bringing in casino gaming. They say that no matter what kind of benefits financially the government might think that they are going to get from it, it is not worth the price that their residents will end up paying. They are alarmed at the rate that gambling addiction grows when casinos are introduced.

The debate has waged for years over whether or not to allow slot machines and gambling into their country, and the church community has already told them that they are not interested in having it come in there. However, they have a new tourism minister, Edmund Bartlett, who is trying to bring in casino gambling again. Bartlett says that slot machines and gambling could bring "colossal benefits to the tourism industry" and is something they should seriously consider.

However, Reverend Peter Garth is urging the administration to rethink that plan. He says that slot machines and gambling go against the “principles and values” of the majority of their residents. They say that they have already been very clear about how they feel regarding slot machines and gambling, and feel that they are not being taken into consideration.

However, Bartlett’s camp says that the church has “jumped the gun” on the issue and that they are only discussing it as a possibility – that they have not made any decisions one way or the other. They are simply looking for a way to bring in more tourism and revenue. They say that they are still looking at all sides of it, including the moral issues that they would face, and are not making any hasty decisions.
