Senior Citizens Hooked on Slot Machines

Experts are now reporting a large increase in senior citizens addicted to some form of gambling, with many addicted to slot machines. They say that more and more seniors are now calling or showing up at Gamblers Anonymous meetings due to their compulsion for slot machine gambling.

A recent study shows that 70% of older Americans say that they participate in at least one form of gambling each year. An increasing number of that percentage is showing signs of compulsive gambling and experts warn that with the increase in availability to those with a gambling issue.

The major problem that they are finding in this group is that they are gambling away everything they have, including their retirement funds. They say that with the number of casinos offering incentives to the older crowd to come and play, more of them are taking them up on what can be a very social environment.

They give them transportation, free meals, etc. as well as the chance to hang out with other people their same age, which is highly desired among this age group. Many are alone and lonely, and these trips to casinos give them an opportunity to interact with others their own age.

Experts say that older women are more at risk than men, for more than one reason. Women are less hesitant to come forward and admit what they have done as they are embarrassed by their behavior, and feel, many times, as the mother of the family that they should know better than to gamble it all away. There are also more women as they live longer than men as a rule, and therefore there are more of them to become susceptible to the slot machines.
