Slot Machines May Be Up To Locals

It turns out that even if the state passes slot machines that they might still not come to your area if your local government says that they are illegal. Kathryn Rowe, an Assistant State Attorney General for Maryland, says that even if the legislature decides that slot machines are legal for the state, they have to get local approval before they can actually bring them in.

If local governmental officials do not want slot machines in their neck of the woods, even if the ballot initiative is passed in 2008 there won’t be slot machines in their neck of the woods. The referendum states that it is up to the locals as to whether or not they come in.

This makes many residents of Maryland happy as they don’t want slot machines to come in, but were afraid that if the legislature says that they are getting them, and the rest of the state approves them, they won’t have any say in it. Both Anne Arundel and Cecil counties say that per their current zoning laws slot machines are not allowed. However, they say that if their residents choose to have slot machines they would be willing to change their zoning laws.

This opens a whole other can of worms for Governor Martin O’Malley as he is planning on a certain amount of revenue to come in from those slot machines. If local officials in locations that are being considered for the slot machines decide to pass legislation that makes it illegal to gamble on slot machines, they will not be able to bring in the games.

The state is currently looking at Anne Arundel, Allegany, Baltimore City, Cecil, and Worcester Counties to bring slot machines in. Other legislators think that the bill is worded improperly because it gives too much power to those locations that could ultimately veto the slot machines.
