County Agrees with Slot Machine Vote

Worcester County is getting slot machines due to a recent vote that made it legal in Maryland. With 59% of Maryland voters responding that they would allow slot machines in the state, they will be located at five locations. Not only did the state’s residents approve it, but so did the county.

Worcester County residents voted 55% in favor of the slot machines, which is what was needed for the measure to pass. The slot machine measure is now part of the Maryland State Constitution. In fact, only two counties did not want the slot machines.

Parts of West Ocean City and Ocean Pines voted against the slot machines, but everyone else voted for them. Even Ocean City residents voted for the slot machines, and they have always been very opposed to the legislation. More than 53% of residents voted to approve the legalization of the slot machines.

Now that the slot machines have been legalized the machines are on their way to the state. They will be in the Ocean Downs Racetrack before you know it. With them on their way, county officials want to be sure that they have a say in what happens with the money and where they go, etc. and have created an advisory board to work with the state.

The group is officially called the Worcester County Slots Work Group and they say that it is strictly meant to be there to work with their leaders in both the political and business arenas to “implement this legislation.” They have informed Governor Martin O’Malley of their intent and although no one has been named to the group, they expect that it will be representatives from both the economic development and planning, and local business leaders. They also expect to have officials from the local chambers of commerce and at least one commissioner sitting on the board.
