Maryland Says Yes to Slot Machines

Marylanders have decided to say yes to slot machines and more revenue. The referendum that was on the ballot this past November 4^th was passed, even though many thought that it wouldn’t. This isn’t the first time that Marylanders have thought about bringing in slot machines, but it is the first time they have decided to do it.

Five locations will bring in 15,000 slot machines, as well as a lot of revenue. According to the group For Maryland For Our Future the slot machines will bring in a nice amount of revenue for the state that is to be earmarked for increasing education dollars.

The money from the slot machines will also work to bring in more revenue to the state by assisting the tracks in building up their purses. They say that will be able to compete more with neighboring states that have slot machines because they will offer higher purses which ultimately brings in better horses, which brings in more business.

This then assists the agricultural industry as they depend greatly on the horse tracks as well. The slot machines end up being a win-win for the entire state; that is, depending on who you talk to.

Those that were opposed to the slot machines still are. They say that the machines are only going to bring crime and addiction to the state, and that no amount of revenue is worth the price that their citizens will ultimately have to pay. They say that they were outspent by the pro slot machine groups, including the casinos, but that they felt that they truly tried hard to keep gambling out of the state.
