Sacrifice and Slot Machines

When it comes to all the political speeches that we have been hearing, especially those from President-elect Barack Obama, the overwhelming themes are hope and sacrifice. It seems that no matter who you voted for, you are probably hopeful that Obama will hold true to his word and we will see a change in the financial situation that our current government has gotten us into.

However, he has also talked about sacrifice. He talks about how we all have to pull together to fix the mess that we are in, and that if we do we will pull out of this as a country. He says that the rich are going to pay more in taxes and the middle and lower classes are going to pay less.

So the question that has many wondering is where Maryland’s Governor, Martin O’Malley fit in with this tax cut. O’Malley has been pushing for slot machines to be legalized in the state, and he finally got his wish. However, what looks like free revenue for our government ultimately looks like a tax on the poor residents of Maryland.

Statistics have shown that it is usually the lower class and uneducated that play the slot machines, because they are hoping that they will lift them out of the financial problems that they have. They are not educated enough to understand that they are simply throwing good money away every time they play them.

But how does this fit in with “we’re all in this together?” It doesn’t. O’Malley has taken the slot machines, and ultimately put a tax on the lower class. Perhaps they can spend the money that Obama will be trying to save them.
