Slot Machines Could be Answer to Budget Woes

For eons states have been touting the restorative powers of slot machines. They say that if you have money problems you should bring in a slot machine. If you have budget shortfalls, you should get a slot machine. The idea is that if you bring in slot machines you will get all of your money problems fixed and never have to worry again.

Illinois seems to be the latest state to fall for this bill of goods. They are trying to make slot machines legal as they say that it will fill a $851 million hole in their state budget – and this way they will be able to fund all of those programs that they want. They say that if they don’t bring in slot machines they will have to cut soup kitchens and education – because let’s face it cutting salaries and wasteful spending just doesn’t make any sense.

But this plan fails to take into consideration the fact that they are counting on slot machine money to fix these problems. Money that comes from gamblers – and if they decide not to gamble then you still don’t have your money. Look at New Jersey. They had a sweet deal for many years where people would come and gamble at their slot machines and they made money hand over fist. Then neighboring states also brought in slot machines, and the economy happened, and next thing you know there are casinos closing down and they are trying to figure out a way to fix the hole in their budget.

You cannot count on a variable such as slot machines and the money that they bring in to fix your problems. Instead of bringing in slot machines, states should consider cutting wasteful spending, of which we all know there is a ton. They should look at some of the programs that are out there that really don’t need to be – before they start cutting education. For some reason that always seems to be the first thing to be cut.
