Bethlehem Slots Battle Heats Up

City Councilmen Gordon Mowrer and Joseph Leeson, Jr. are heading the fight to keep slot machine and table gambling out of Bethlehem, but they are fighting an uphill battle. They tried to ban gambling all together, but were defeated. They are now trying to ban table games, as they feel that if they can’t keep the slot machines out, they can at least limit the amount of gambling that goes on in their town.

They are not alone in their fight. The majority of the council voted to allow gambling in the industrial district where the Bethlehem Steel Mill sits. Hundreds of residents showed up asking the council not to allow the slot machines. They said that they did not want what the slot machines would bring with them, such as crime, addiction and bankruptcies – to name a few.

Supporters of slot machines and gambling say that Bethlehem is going to feel the effects of having a casino nearby no matter where it ends up. It is between Bethlehem and Allentown as to who might end up with the slot machines. They say that since they are so close to each other, it doesn’t matter – whatever problems the slot machines are going to bring, they are going to bring them anyway. They argue that they will at least get a “host fee” to help them deal with the problems that will come out of it, whereas if the slot machines go to Allentown, they will be on their own.

Most feel that Leeson and Mowrer will not succeed in the ban, but many appreciate the fact that they are trying.
