California Gambling Ping-PongLet’s say you have a couple of million dollars hanging around, and you were going to put it in the campaign of the Democrats for they have always supported you. Now, let’s say, at the very last minute, the Republicans stepped forward and said that they were going to do whatever you wanted. Would you put your money behind them instead? That is the question, and the Indian tribes of California are answering a resounding, “Yes!” In 2004, when Governor Schwarzenegger was campaigning for the office, he said that he would not support the Indian gaming tribes and that they were “special interest groups” and that they were part of the problem with the state. Fast forward to Election 2006, and all of a sudden the Governor has decided to start granting wishes – starting with the “special interest groups.” He started signing compacts all over the place, totaling an influx of thousands of slot machines into the state. The problem is not just his major turn around, as it is when he did it. With the mostly Democratic Legislature closing up their session, and not planning on coming back until January – as per usual – Schwarzenegger drops these new compacts in their laps. He approved casinos and slot machines galore, and then left it on the desks of the Democrats to do with it what they would. The Democrats did not have enough time before the end of session to do their due diligence, so they had to close session without voting on them, and irking a few Indians in the process. The Republicans then started hollering that they wanted a special session to approve them, which the Democrats could not or would not give them, and now the Republicans come out smelling like a rose. The Indian tribes then take their millions that they were putting behind the Democrats, and throw them behind the Republicans. With the election weeks away, we shall see who ends up getting voted into office. The Indians had better hope for two things – either the Republicans win and stick to their word and approve the slot machine compacts; or the Democrats win and don’t hold a grudge. slot machine, slot machine, slot machine, slot machine Back to October Index - Slot Machines Fan |
