Cell Phones Pay for Slot Machine PlayingThe Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department has a large expense, and it is cell phones. Not only are the expensive to buy, but they are also expensive to pay for the monthly bill, especially when they don’t even have the phone. That’s right, for two years 284 cell phones were missing and the WASD kept paying the bills for them. It turns out they were used to pay for slot machine playing. In November of 2004, a janitor who worked for the WASD admitted to stealing the 284 cell phones and pawning them to play the slot machines. According to the department, supposedly they have run up more than $4 million in unauthorized expenses in the past two years, because no one ever tried to get the phones back, or cancel the accounts. It turns out that the cell phones or the fact that they were used to fund slot machine playing is actually the least of the WASD’s problems. On further investigation, it was discovered that the department has lots of outstanding bills, and lost money. The slot machine scandal was just the beginning. It turns out that the janitor actually stole Blackberrys, desk phones, a dozen computers, headsets, and floor polishers. He made roughly $50,000 on the items, which he then used to play the slot machines at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. slot machine, slot machine, slot machine, slot machine Back to October Index - Slot Machines Fan |
