The Closer You Are, the More You Gamble

There have been numerous studies done that show where you are in proximity to slot machines and other types of gambling will determine how much you gamble. Makes sense, you are going to gamble more if it is in your backyard than if it is across the country.

A new multi-year study conducted showed that problem gambling had increased in Surrey and Langley in 2005 – after slot machines and gaming arrived. They are showing that the Langley Cascades casino’s opening, as well as the slot machines coming into Frasier Downs in Surry, have added to the problem of gambling in the Lower Mainland. They cite that these, in addition to the two facilities in Vancouver, where adding to a growing problem of slot machine and gambling addiction in the area.

They showed that problem gamblers grew from 2.5% to 4.9% over the course of a year. They say that the venues have produced more gamblers than there were before. The report also says that the number of mental health clients has increased in Langley due to the location of the slot machines and the casinos, as the temptations are just too much for those with a problem.

The number of gamblers has increased, which will add to the numbers. In 2004, 76% of Langley City residents said they never played slot machines. In 2005, only 60% still maintained that they had not played the slot machines. Six percent of those that said they play the slot machines said that they go everyday.
