Federal Employees Play Slots

The U.S. Department of the Interior is made up of roughly 80,000 employees. People, who it turns out, are just like us. Most people goof off at work once in awhile, surfing the internet when they should be working. But not all of us have to answer to a nation of taxpayers when we do it.

In the report “Excessive Indulgences: Personal Use of the Internet at the Department of the Interior" that is compiled by the agency’s watchdog group, it was discovered that federal employees are wasting lots of time surfing the net. They are accessing porn, slot machines, auctions, games, you name it.

The fifteen page report showed that over the course of a week, from six different agencies, that the log entries for sexually explicit and slot machine gambling web sites were in excess of 4,700 hits. There were more than 7,700 computer users that spent more than 2,000 hours accessing games and auction sites such as eBay. The problem isn’t just in the surfing; it is that we pay for it. It costs us more than $2 million a year for them to play on their computers instead of working. There were some who were spending almost an hour at porn sites. One case had an employee spend 14 hours over the course of one week at an internet game site.

With the release of the report, there will undoubtedly be some changes in the departments, increased security, harsher punishments for offenders, etc. for it is against government rules to surf the net in the first place.
