Figueiredo Preserving What She Can

Carla Figueiredo has her work cut out for her. She is an architect with Macao’s Cultural Affairs Bureau, and she is concerned about Macao. It is her job to preserve the culture of Macao, in the light of the slot machines and casinos that are currently spreading like wildfire in her country.

She is not alone in her concerns. There are many within the community that fear that the slot machines will become all the Macao is about. Figueiredo must figure out a way to keep their heritage alive, while getting along with the slot machine casinos at the same time.

Other residents think that it is “overkill” to be inundated with as many slot machines and gambling casinos that Macao has. They think that if one or two had come in, it would have made a nice change to the norm that it has been, but by making the island one casino after another, the idea of who Macao was is slowly changing.

Macao is expecting millions upon millions of tourists over the years, with the numbers growing and growing as people keep coming to play the slot machines to have a go at the tables. The residents of Macao just don’t know how they are going to survive in that atmosphere.
