No Comment from Krasnoyarsk Casinos

It just goes to show you the differences in our countries, especially when it comes to free speech. President Vladimir Putin is pushing for an initiative that would eliminate all casinos, slot machine halls, etc. from Krasnoyarsk. He wants to put the slot machines, etc. into four uninhabited areas. The gambling owners would then have the opportunity to build new towns in these areas.

Now, let’s say President Bush decides that he is taking all of the slot machines in the country and moving them all someplace out in the desert where no one lives. Do you think that the people of this country, especially the casino owners, might have something to say about that? Yet not one of the Krasnoyarsk casino owners had a comment about Putin’s proposal.

When you ask them what their thoughts are, comments range from asking the media not to bother them, to the fact that they didn’t know if this would affect them at all. One said he was tired of being asked the question how this would affect them and said he just didn’t care. Whether it is from fear of retaliation, or whether they really just don’t care, no one knows why no one is talking. It is like they don’t care whether or not they can operate their slot machines, and they don’t care how much money they are going to lose. Most just didn’t seem to think that it would bother them at all.
