Marlins Coming to Town?

There has been talk lately of bringing the Marlins to Broward County, and using slot machine revenue to pay for a new stadium. Depending on which side of the fence you are on, this is either a great idea, or a complete betrayal of the voters by their elected officials.

Officials want to use the slot machine revenue to pay for part of the stadium; the Marlins would be contributing as well. The land would come from the Isle of Capri Casinos – they own Pompano Park. The money was originally destined to help with those areas that would be taxed by the incoming casinos, and now the government wants to change the rules. If they don’t put the money where it was supposed to go, some wonder where it will come from. They also want to know how the county benefits from the stadium – how much per ticket sale will they get?

It has not been discussed yet how Major League Baseball plays into this, as they might not want to be linked with gambling. However, if the slot machines are going to buy them a new home, where is the harm in that? The team will benefit from being in the middle of the county and thus more people will probably come to games. They also get a new stadium, and the casino owners get more slot machine business from the people attending the games.

Basically what it comes down to is who gets to decide where the money goes? The voters have already spoken, so they really need to be able to vote as to whether or not they want a stadium or if they want the slot machine revenue to go where it was originally intended to go.
