Nebraska Fighting Slot Machines

There is currently a proposal on the Nebraska ballot to legalize video keno. According to the proposal, there would be no legal limit to the number of slot machines that would be allowed in each location, nor would there be a limit to the number of slot machine parlors that would be able to open. Needless to say, there are a lot of Nebraskans that are not very happy about the proposed slot machine bill.

According to the National Gambling Impact Study Commission’s report that was put together for the President and Congress in 1999, “There are no measurable societal benefits to be derived from the introduction or continuation of convenience gambling facilities…These facilities benefit only a few operators, while bringing gambling into neighborhoods in close proximity to children and families.”

Opponents of the slot machine bill point out that South Dakota tried bringing in slot machines and look how that turned out. The state has less jobs than they had before they brought in the slot machines, they lose $100 million in economic activity a year, and they have thousands more crimes each year because of the neighborhood slot machine parlors.

South Carolina has a similar story – they threw out 34,000 slot machines that had gotten into their state through a legal loophole. Iowans just banned thousands of slot machines as well, as did Louisiana. They say that if you look at the states that had brought in slot machines thinking it would benefit them and then got rid of them – they must have learned something from having slot machines that made them not want to have them anymore.
