November Ballot Will Have Slot Machines on It

According to the great state of Ohio, and their officials, the Learn and Earn slot machine initiative has officially garnered enough signatures to put the issue on the November ballot. It got a little close there for awhile, as some of their signatures were not deemed eligible, but the group went out and raised several thousand more signatures – more than enough needed to put the slot machine initiative to the voters to decide.

Opponents continue to argue that the trouble that the slot machines will bring in with them is not worth any amount of money. They point out that the largest group playing the slot machines are usually those of lower income and education, and those are the people who need the money the most. They also point out that wherever slot machines are there is a higher rate of crime, poverty, bankruptcy, and suicide.

Supporters argue that Ohio already has gambling, that the lottery and the racetracks are already feeding whatever gambling beast there is, so by bringing in slot machines it won’t change the way people think. They claim that there can only be a benefit from bringing them in, as the slot machine revenue will be in the billions of dollars, and the industry will bring in thousands of jobs.

They also point out that the gambling that currently exists in the state does not allow for a scholarship fund for top seniors at high schools. They show that only the slot machine initiative supports furthering education.
