Ohio’s Numbers Fight

The fact that people don’t want slot machines in Ohio is becoming pretty apparent these days. Supporters keep claiming that there are literally millions of reasons to approve the slot machines, millions in dollars that is. Opponents keep saying that no matter how much money is brought in, it just doesn’t matter – they don’t want slot machines and the problems they bring with them into town. Now they have found something else to argue about – how much money the slot machines will actually bring in.

Learn and Earn, the campaign who wants the slot machines, says that with 31,500 slot machines, they would be bringing in $853 million a year. The State of Ohio’s Office of Budget and management disagrees. They say that the state can only handle about 10,035 slot machines – which means the slot machine’s revenue has just dropped to $324 million.

Ohioans voted down casino proposals in 1990 and 1999. Opponents of the current plan argue the ballot issue aims to change the state constitution to benefit a select group of businessmen. They also predict that the slot machines will create more gambling addiction problems.

So now it is down to whose camp you believe. If you were already on the fence as to whether or not to vote for Issue, the constitutional amendment that would bring in slot machines, the amount of revenue is probably a big deal. But if you were already for or against them, you probably won’t make up your mind base o the amount of revenue that they are actually going to bring in. After all, they are going to bring in millions if not billions – and that is the heart of the matter.
