With the election getting closer, there has been more and more talk of bringing gambling into Ohio. The group Learn and Earn is pushing to get slot machines approved to bring in a scholarship fund for the state’s top performing high school students. They have won the right to be on the ballot, so now it is a matter of convincing residents to approve it.

The politicians are on both sides as usual. Governor Bob Taft and Senator George Voinovich both oppose legalizing slot machines. They think that it would be a huge mistake for the state, and they have pledged to do everything they can in their power to make sure that it does not get approved.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and Cuyahoga County Commissioners support the slot machine initiative saying that the amount of revenue is worth it. They point out that it will bring in thousands of jobs, funding for education, and millions of dollars into local economies. Four of the proposed slot machine locations will be in their county. "The best antidote for the plight of the poor is jobs and the opportunity for higher education," county Commissioner Peter Lawson Jones said. "That's what this proposal provides."

According to Ohio Learn and Earn estimates, both Cleveland and Cuyahoga County would receive approximately $75 million each year.
