Pachinko Issues in Japan

With the decline of Pachinko in Japan, economists are worried that the amount of revenue that comes in from the slot machines will continue to steadily fall. There are several issues at work in the country that is leading to less patronage of the slot machines, and officials are trying to figure out what to do.

One of the big problems is the ages of those who play. In 1994, 30 million Japanese played pachinko. Then, last year, the number had dropped to 17 million, and experts expect that number to continue to decline. One of the problems is that those who played it in their youth and middle ages are now of retiring age, and are working with a fixed or limited income. They don’t have the money to put into the slot machines anymore, so they aren’t playing as much, or aren’t playing the slot machines at all.

The second problem is the amount of the payouts from the machines. Hard gambling is not allowed, so winners take their merchandise that they win to a exchange desk, who gives them cash for the prize. However, the government became concerned about the amount of money that was being paid out, so they revised their regulations and banned one of the higher paying slot machines. This is going to hurt the smaller businesses, and will cost millions to replace them.
