Pipes Defends Marati Suit

Guam Greyhound has filed a lawsuit against Jackie Marati to try and keep her quiet until after the election. Marati has been a vocal opponent to Proposal B, Guam Greyhounds proposition to bring slot machines into Guam. However, it looks like it is going to backfire on the group, as Guam has laws against that sort of thing.

Guam has what is called an anti-SLAPP statute that says she cannot be silenced for speaking her mind against the slot machines. The law is supposed to shield anyone or any organization that exercises their right to free speech. By filing the lawsuit, they were hoping to keep Marati quiet, but all it really did was give her a larger forum to talk against the slot machines.

Marati’s lawyer, Anita Arriola, says, “Make no mistake about it, John Baldwin and the Guam Greyhound's suit against Marati is nothing more than an attempt to shut her up."

Guam Greyhound’s attorney, Richard Pipes, says that this is not the case, and that it is a “business lawsuit” and he plans to “file a vigorous opposition.”
