Seminoles vs. Florida

The Seminole Indians of Florida have been trying to come to an agreement with Governor Jeb Bush as to the kind of slot machines that they are allowed to have, but negotiations have not gone smoothly. Under the Federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, they have the right to have the same kind of slot machines that are offered at non-Seminole gaming places – and now that Broward voters have approved Class III slot machines, they say they are entitled to them as well.

The US Department of Interior is trying to keep out of it, and urged the governor and the tribe to come to some sort of agreement last month. They have 60 days to come up with a deal before the Department of the Interior will be forced to step in and lay down the law. The Seminoles currently have Class II machines which allow players to compete against each other, but want Class II slot machines so that they are on “equal footing” with the rest of the state.

If the state does not come to an agreement with the tribe, the Dept of Interior is prepared to step in and “issue a final decision setting forth the proposed Class III gaming procedures for the Tribe," wrote George Skibine, the department's acting deputy secretary for policy and economic development.

It is in the state’s best interest to come to an agreement and sign a compact with the Indians. Without a compact, the state won’t get any money from the slot machines, and the tribe is willing to reopen compact negotiations – Jeb should probably jump on it while he still can.
