There are roughly 750,000 slot machines in the United States, with about 200,000 of them in Nevada alone. There are your main gambling regions, such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City, but many people forget that there are some very large Indian reservations that have slot machine gambling as well. Over the course of 20 years, slot machines increased in Nevada by about 110,000 – they have increased across the country as well.

It is amazing to think that outside of the main gambling Meccas there are other very large areas that like to gamble as well. Take Ohio for instance, in 2005 Ohioans gambled roughly $1.12 billion at the slot machines and they don’t even have casinos yet. They travel to neighboring casinos and spend their money there.

The more slot machines the country adds however, the more gambling addicts we see. The latest figures show that 1 in 100 Americans are addicted to gambling, and 2 in 100 are addicted to gambling that live within 50 miles of a slot machine. The slot machines are responsible for bringing in roughly 70% of revenue for Las Vegas, and those numbers are similar across the board. With slot machines gradually increasing, and it being a major ballot issue come this November – as many states want to add slot machines – we can expect to see the number of problem gamblers increasing as well.

The slot machines pay well, especially if you consider where they started. The first slot machine paid out somewhere around $5, which is just a little different from the $39.7 million that was paid out in 2003. One more quick fact? All slot machines play the same music – that is they are all tuned in to the musical key of “C” so that when slot machines are near each other they won’t clash in their music.
