With the new changes coming forward for the slot machine laws in Pennsylvania, some are wondering why the state doesn’t just start leaving well enough alone. The state has decided to eliminate the slot machine middlemen so that the casinos can buy their slot machines directly from the manufacturers and distributors. However, now they have added another law, and it really doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to a lot of people.

They have added in a clause that says there is a 50% cap on the number of slot machines that can be purchased from any one vendor. The bill directly targets the large slot machine giant International Gaming Technology (IGT). The company, based out of Las Vegas, is one of the largest in the world, and has about 70% of the slot machine market. They also carry the majority of slot machines that slot machine players want to play. This ends up hurting not only IGT, but also the individual casinos. They obviously want to buy the slot machines that they know players want to play, and with this new legislation, inserted by Senator Vincent Fumo (D-Philadelphia), they now have to pick and choose which slot machines they can get that they know will be popular.

Considering the clout that Fumo has, no one wants to go against him on it, so everyone suffers. The slot machine makers, the casinos, and the slot machine players. They say that since there are other things in the bill that make sense, like protecting the slot machines from local anti-smoking ordinances, why touch it – just let it pass as is. The problem is now the smaller bars and taverns will pay for it, as they are still subjected to the smoking laws.
