Smarty Jones RememberedJockey Stewart Elliott had the ride of his life, literally. He was the jockey of the famous Smarty Jones, who won the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. It was not known who his jockey was until Elliot lost the Belmont Stakes and the chance for the Triple Crown – then everyone blamed him for the loss. Elliott is now at Delaware Park, and many people don’t know that he is fifth in jockey standings with 61 wins. He has earned over $2.2 million dollars in his career, and was one of the top riders at Philadelphia Park – where he rode Smarty. Elliot lives in Lambertville, NJ, and although slot machines are coming in to Philly Park, he doesn’t think he will go back. For him, the slot machines are not enough of a draw for him to leave where he is. Things are good for him there. Elliot isn’t planning on working much longer, he says he has had his fun and earned his piece of the pie. "I've seen a lot of riders go 20, 30 years, and they don't have anything at the end of their career," he said. "I want to be secure. I'd like to win and ride for good people for five or six more years." lot machine, slot machine, slot machine, slot machine Back to October Index - Slot Machines Fan |
