Spain’s New Gambling Laws

Spain has always been known as a large revenue source for slot machines and the lottery. They are also huge in the internet slot machine gambling industry, although it is technically illegal in their country. However, one thing they don’t have is bookmaking, which several companies from Britain are looking to change.

Considering what a huge industry sports betting is already in the country, it was just a matter of time before it became an industry unto itself. There are three bookmaking companies that are looking to expand from Britain to Spain, they are: Betfred, William Hill, and Stanleybet.

Betfred has already signed a deal with a Basque company called Ekasa that will build and operate the new betting shops. They will be using it primarily to take bets from football matches, but they expect other sports to follow suit. The country has horse racing, but it is a minor betting industry there. As Bilbao, where the company will be located, is the first to allow bookmaking, it is the perfect location for Betfred. If this goes well, they are planning on opening several other shops throughout Spain.

They think Madrid will be next to allow bookmaking, and then Catalonia and Andalusia will follow after that. The other companies will be competing for spots in these areas as well, and they are waiting for the word from Madrid before they move forward. William Hill has signed a deal with Codere, a Spanish gaming company, which already operates 30,000 slot machines across Spain.
