Tax Relief is a Gamble

Many people in Harrisburg are asking for property tax relief. The amount that homeowners pay is putting a drain on them economically, and the state has promised to do something about it. Now the homeowners are just wondering when that might be.

Governor Rendell promised slot machines would help them by bringing in more income into the state, and thus relieving tax payers of some of their property taxes. However, so far, no relief.

The problem is that the state and property taxes are what supports their public schools. The state reduced the amount that they were paying for education from 50 to 35%, which meant that the schools needed to find another source of income for their support system. They decided to start tapping the homeowners to bridge the gap between what the state was paying and what they needed.

When Governor Rendell came up with the plan three years ago, he showed that the public school districts could get money from the slot machine revenue, and thus help out those who were suffering under the property tax debt. He also showed that the slot machines would help out the racetracks as well, by bringing them in additional income – thus saving the tracks and the thousands of jobs that would be lost if the racetracks went out of business. The government liked the idea so much that they said they wanted to bring in casinos as well as the slot machines at the racetracks – and the Governor agreed.
