Trinidad’s Announcement Angers Casinos

With the announcement from the Prime Minister as to the compete ban on slot machines, casino workers and owners were understandably upset as to what they were going to do now that this had been announced. The immediate ban on slot machines could cause a number of the casinos to have to close fairly quickly, as they make up the majority of their income. Not only would the casinos close, but with those closures you end up with quite a few people out of work. Estimates put the number unemployed at 15,000 – which would be a drain on the country economically.

The casinos had gotten together and are seeking legal representation, as they are certainly going to fight the ruling. They are seeking to save their jobs as well as those of their employees. One of the casinos commented that their staff force is made up of mostly single mothers, and they just didn’t know what they would do without their jobs. They said that they were all for the government regulating the casino industry, just not eliminating it.

The employees that would be affected would be roughly 7,000 workers in the casinos, and another 8,000 made up of vendors and suppliers. The casinos have chosen to continue running until they hear otherwise from their legal representation, for they say that until the government knocks on their doors, they are going to fight it.

One of the casino representatives pointed out that they spend roughly $10,000 a year to have their slot machines licensed. Each casino has about 150 slot machines, and that equals about $1.5 million a year – from each casino. He doesn’t understand why the government would take the money from the slot machines and throw it away, considering the majority of that money goes to the government.
