Senator Wants You To Vote No

With the election getting closer by the minute, Senator George Voinovich is hitting the trail hard to get the word out about the evils of slot machines. With Learn and Earn announcing everywhere that they are going to give Ohio’s children a chance at education, the senator is right to be worried.

He is not alone in his fight against the slot machines. There are many other politicians in the state that are fighting the amendment as well. If it is passed, it would create a constitutional amendment that would allow slot machine gambling in the state of Ohio.

The Learn and Earn campaign is pushing hard to get the votes, and with most people thinking only of the scholarships that will be paid for by the slot machine revenue, they will probably get it passed. However, many politicians are aware that the numbers are not really turning out to be what the campaign is promising, and know that the slot machine revenue will not be as high as promised, and therefore there won’t be as many scholarships as promised either.

The slot machine initiative is saying that the slot machines will enable the top performers of the state’s high schools to attend an in-state college. Voinovich thinks that is ridiculous, as the top students will get money anyhow because of their grades. If the group were promising scholarships to all of the other students, and not just the top 5%, then it might mean something.

Voinovich also quotes a Cleveland State University study that says roughly 109,000 Ohioans could become addicted to gambling if slot machines are brought in.
