West Virginia's Gambling Competition

With many of their neighboring states bringing in slot machines, West Virginia has good reason to be worried about their cut of the slot machine revenue. The West Virginia Racing Association and state representatives have tried to convince the state that those counties that currently have tracks with slot machines should be allowed to vote on whether or not they want to increase their revenue by bringing in table games as well.

The group polled residents and that poll showed that West Virginians like the idea of table games coming into the state. According to the survey, nearly 61% of residents like the idea of bringing in table games. They also said that they believe it should be an issue decided by the voters of those specific counties that already have slot machines. They have been fighting to have table games brought in for over two years now, as they know that out of state slot machines are going to affect both their revenue and their jobs. If they add table games they will keep revenue in the state and keep the jobs they have if not add more.

Politics being what they are, the state has been hesitant to act on the table bill – and it sits in the legislature. The House of Delegates has not yet debated it, so no one knows when they will even get to voting on it. The Senate approved the bill in 2005, but the House still sits on it. What is clear to everyone except the government of West Virginia is that they are going to have to act – for their slot machine revenue is not going to last at the level it is currently at forever.
