Battle Over Passamaquoddy Casino

The supporters and opponents of a new Passamaquoddy Tribal Casino are out in full force fighting for and against the measure for them to bring in slot machines. The vote as to whether or not they are approved will go before the state’s voters on the November 6th statewide election ballot.

Supporters are calling their campaign to support the slot machines “Yes on Question 1,” and they say that it is a no-brainer that slot machines should be brought in. They say that it will bring revenue to the state and on the local level, and it will help the tribe as well.

The opponents of the harness track and slot machine addition have started a Political Action Committee or PAC to raise contributions so that they can fight the addition of the slot machines to Washington County. The name of their PAC is “Gambling with the way life should be.”

The referendum would also allow a high-stakes beano license for the Passamaquoddy tribe, if it is approved. The Christian Civic League of Maine is behind the PAC, but they are joined in opposing the slots with Casinos No and No Slots for ME – as all three groups think that the addition of slot machines would be a huge mistake for the county and for the state.
