Vegas Says No

The Nevada Gaming Commission has decided to block the ability of gamblers to get vouchers for the slot machines through the direct use of ATMs in their casinos. They ATM type machines would allow gamblers to put their ATM cards into the machines and get back a voucher for play at the slot machines.

Problem gambling advocates were thrilled at the prospect of making it tougher for gamblers to get their money to play at the slot machines, and welcomed the decision by the commission to keep that access limited. They were afraid that this would only help problem gamblers get access to their money, and wanted to ensure that this would not be the case.

Others are not so happy, including the businesses that came up with the idea. The fact that they will not be allowed to use the machines to play the slot machines will cost millions of dollars in potential slot machine revenue, as well as the revenue that would have come from the ATM type machines had they been sold.

Some say that the move was a good one, but it is merely a band aid for the true gambling problem that exists in Vegas. They say that it is merely a public relations ploy, trying to make it look like they are addressing the issue of slot machine addiction, when really they aren’t doing anything as the new machines would not have increased revenue by all that much.
