Schwarzenegger’s Vetoes Don’t Add UpGovernor Arnold Schwarzenegger has made a lot of enemies in his day. The governor of California has seemingly been focusing his efforts on bringing lots and lots of slot machines to the state, without considering all of the other bills that are going past his desk. Take for example the bill that says fast food restaurants have to list what is in their food – that’s great, people are thrilled. However, he then vetoed a bill that would have charged a $60 per container fee on cargo ships that bring in goods. It would have financed the air pollution efforts, but Alaska Governor Sarah Palin asked him not to so he didn’t. He also vetoed a bill that said health insurance companies cannot drop a person just because they use it too much. And he signed a bill that investigates leaking of hospital records is wrong – only after it started happening to celebrities. But then he signed a bill allowing the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians to bring in a new casino. The casino is going to run 5,000 slot machines, which is going to ultimately take more money out of California residents’ pockets. There will be a lovely increase in money for the state however, just not for their residents.
