8th District Democratic Candidates

The race is heating up for Maryland’s 8^th District – there are six candidates running for the office, and on September 12^th voters will narrow that down to three. Those three will then compete against the Republicans in the November general election.

All but one of the democratic candidates support slot machine gambling to be brought into the state. Ruth Baisden said that she felt there has been a shortage of tax revenue coming back to the community, and thinks that slot machines at the race tracks might be a great way to bring in more money. Eric Bromwell, whose father once held the position he is going for, feels that adding slot machines to the state would be a great idea, and wants to build slots parlors in areas that people traveling through the state would have to pass one on their way.

Alec Frick wants the slot machines in, but he is not as concerned with where they go as what the state does with the money. He wants to see the revenue going into school construction and renovations. Peter Definbaugh thinks that you can’t get enough slots in, and wants to go further than just putting slot machines into the racetracks. "I think we need a casino downtown. Let the rich tourists come and play the tables," he said.

Andrea Koshko is the lone slots-free Maryland supporter. She does not want to see them come into the state and said, “"With slots comes more gambling and people losing their money. Horse tracks are fine, but not slots."

Todd Schuler supports the slots but only if they are handled correctly and don’t affect other businesses in the state. His fear is that the money that goes into the slot machines will end up coming out of the pockets of the small business people.
