Atlantic City Changing Its Image

Atlantic City used to be seen as the place where the “shoebees” came to town to play the slot machines, eat the buffets, and then get back on the bus and go home. (For those of you who don’t know what a shoebee is, it is a tourist. Long ago tourists used to come in on day trips with their lunches in their shoe boxes, hence the term.)

The days of old are over however, and the town is shedding its old image. Gone are the days of rolls of quarters bringing in the tourists to play the slot machines, and the casinos just sitting back and waiting for the money to pour in. The casinos have stiff competition now from Foxwoods in Connecticut and from NY and Pennsylvania now bringing in slot machines as well. They are trying to class up their image, and that means classier hotels and casinos, and many more slot machines.

Gone are the days where the Sands ruled the strip, they have announced that they are closing their doors, unable to keep up with progress. In came the new ones. The Borgata Hotel, Casino, and Spa’s opening signaled a big change for the town. They cater to an upscale crowd, and have not been disappointed by the numbers. People want a classy place to come to, to sleep over at, etc. – the Borgata gave them that. The Tropicana Casino and Resort built The Quarter to try and stay in the game. Harrah’s Entertainment turned the old Ocean One Mall into a high end shopping pier with the likes of Gucci now lining their halls. The changes are for the better for the city, and their numbers are going to keep increasing as they keep finding ways of making their slot machine players happy.
