Aqua Caliente Deal Passes SenateThe Aqua Caliente Band’s compact with the state of California has passed the Senate by an extremely narrow margin. They literally got one more vote than they needed to send it off to the Assembly. If approved, the tribe would pay the state $23.4 million for the 2,000 slot machines they already operate. Then they would pay them 15% of net wins for every machine above the 2,000 – up to a maximum of 5,000. If, and when, the tribe has the additional 3,000 slot machines up and running, the deal would net the government approximately $81.9 million a year. The deal now goes to the Assembly, where it is not certain that it will pass. The labor leaders are holding out hope that it won’t pass, and they think that the narrow margin that it passed by in the Senate is a good sign. Supporters of the deal think that the amount of possible income alone that will be headed California’s way is more than enough to sway the vote to a passing one. A hearing is set for Wednesday, and the Assembly lawmakers could put it to a vote on Thursday at the earliest. If it reaches Governor Schwarzenegger’s desk, it is expected that he will sign it – especially since he is the one who wrote it with the Aqua Caliente Tribe. Then the US Interior gets it, and if they pass it then it is a done deal. Senator Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica) voted against it, as she feels that if they are going to expand slot machines in California, it should be for a tribe that really needs the money.
