Aqua Caliente Labor WoesAqua Caliente employees are not happy, and they are holding up the new slot machine and casino compact approved by the governor and the tribe recently. In 1999, Governor Gray Davis signed gaming compacts with labor provisions for the tribes. The union, UNITE HERE, is not pleased with those provisions and wants them updated. The group told the Assembly Governmental Organization Committee that they want the rules changed, and that the tribe is intimidating workers. They are using the tribe’s labor practices to assist them in blocking the deal in the Legislature. They claim that when they try to organize the employees of the Aqua Caliente, that the employees are intimidated and harassed. The Chairman of the Aqua Caliente, Richard Milanovich said that their employees have never even expressed an interest in joining a union. He also said that they are making an average of $16.40 per hour with their tips, so they are doing pretty well. He said, “We care about our team members.” Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia (R-Cathedral City) said that the tribe is known for their benefit packages that exceed other businesses in the area, and that they were an excellent employer. However, the union is not buying it and will continue to fight. Back to September Index - Slot Machines Fan |
