Blanco Administration Accused of Blocking Funds

Governor Kathleen Blanco is accused of not issuing approvals on video gaming machines that she views as slot machines. Alton Ashy, a lobbyist for one of the slot machine companies, said that the governor has determined that the video gaming machines are too much like regular slot machines and therefore will not approve them. He said that since they resemble slot machines, the governor fears spreading gambling and therefore has chosen not to act on the approval.

The officials of the Blanco administration say that this is not true, that they are simply taking their time to approve the slot machines so that they are regulated correctly. The video game bingo games look much like Vegas style slot machines, and thus the governor is hesitant to approve them. Since Louisiana does not allow slot machines but does allow bingo games, they think it is understandable why they are erring on the side of caution.

Opponents of the slot/bingo machines are happy that she is dragging her feet, as they think that they resemble slot machines so much that gamblers are just going to lose their money in the machines. Ashy says that many charities use the machines as they are very profitable for them. He says that by not approving the machines, the governor is taking money out of the charities’ pockets. He said that the governor isn’t trying to change the law; they are just not issuing permits. “You cannot, as a department, just arbitrarily not issue permits because you do not want to,” he said.
