Bookies are Looking Good

Everyone bets. Ok, so that is not only a simplification, it’s not even really true. What is true is that a lot of people gamble, some just have higher stakes than others. What differentiates the guy playing the slot machine from the guy who bets on Monday night football? Nothing really, but the arena is constantly changing as to what is defined as betting, and what is legal and what isn’t. What has become very clear as of late is that online betting is a huge business and now it is illegal.

If you live in Nevada you don’t have a problem, but everywhere else it is illegal to bet on sports. So Americans have been using various online betting tools to bet on anything and everything. In fact, last year Americans spent over $6 billion in online bets. And then the bottom fell out of it. Two months ago the FBI arrested David Carruthers, the CEO of Betonsports.com – a British bookmaker. They charged him with various things, but they all added up to online bookmaking. The company then announced it would no longer be accepting bets from Americans. Two weeks ago Sportingbet.com came under the same fire, and now the House of Representatives has passed a bill that bans online gambling.

The government says they just did it so that they can get a hold on what is becoming a national epidemic, especially with the young. There is no way to really know how much gambling, especially the online slot machines, is done by those of age – as anyone can lie about their age online. Stolen credit cards add to the problem, as you can’t prove it is yours. There is also the fact that supposedly some internet bookies are terrorist fronts, and now you are funding their attacks by playing their slot machines. The government feels that by assign laws to protect their citizens from online gambling, they will also help get a hold of the problem with addictive gambling as well. For slot machines may be danger for those with a problem, imagine having that same problem and being able to play the slot machines from the comfort of your own home.

So if you want to bet on sports, you’d better find your neighborhood bookie to do it, and you’d better make sure you don’t get caught, for it is still illegal.
