Candidates Differ on SlotsThere are three state representatives competing for the First Bristol District Democratic nomination in the primaries. Each of them has plans for bringing in local aid to the district, but each of them seems to have a different idea of how to go about doing that. The candidates are Matthew Donovan, Paul Feeney and Claire Naughton. Whoever wins the nomination will go up against Republican Frederick “Jay” Barrows in the November election. Feeney said he would like to see more aid going to the schools, and one way of doing that would be to bring in slot machines into Massachusetts. He feels that cutting the state budget would not help, that they need a new influx of cash instead of trying to redistribute the money they have. He cites that other states have seen a huge increase in their funding by bringing in the slot machines, and that all they need to do is follow suit to see millions in revenue from the slots. "By not closing the door on slot machines, that’s $100 million right off the bat that comes in for us," he said. Naughton disagrees, she thinks that there is plenty of money in the state’s coffers that is currently being wasted, and instead of slot machines, they should just move around the money they currently have. She thinks that by changing the Foundation Budget Formula they can avoid the slot machine dilemma, and fix what is obviously broken within the current budget. Donovan supports a restructurization as well. He feels that the state’s budgetary process has had problems for a long time, and that by moving money around they can solve the problems currently facing the district. With Feeney the only one looking to bring in slot machines and thus more revenue, and the other two looking to move around what they already have, this is a noted distinction for the candidates. Depending on what the voters are thinking, this could mean whether slot machines win or lose. slot machine, slot machine, slot machine, slot machine Back to September Index - Slot Machines Fan |
