CERA Attacks Tribes

The Citizens Equal Rights Alliance announced today that they are appalled at the number of slot machines that the Indian tribes have been allowed to bring into the country. They released a document called, “Congress Malfunctions on Winning Slot Machine Ticket; Indian Tribes Win Again." The group feels that the country is allowing the tribes to run wild with their slot machines and casinos, and feel that as it is a “predatory casino industry” that it should be stopped.

Their points were:

1. House Bill, HR 4893: “The Right Act” limited tribal off-reservation casinos, and served to give him leverage in his next election.

2. Senate Bill 2078: Senator John McCain tried limiting off-reservation casinos but with ambiguous language and loopholes that really didn’t do much of anything except increase the number of applications for off-reservation casinos in the days prior to April 15, 2006.

They claim that the politicians are passing bills that seem to be helping but in all actuality are either doing nothing or hurting the spread of gambling across the nation. They claim that the property and sales taxes are affected in the town they are in, and tribalism becomes the governing factor in the town. The tribal governments are exempt from Campaign Finance Reform, so they are eligible to give as much as they want to any political campaign – and cannot not only be held to the same standards, but they don’t even have to disclose the amounts.

They claim that the government is simply trying to make themselves look better for their constituents, while at the same time not really doing anything to anger the tribes at them so they can keep getting their campaigns financed.
