Jackpot Charity Bingo Players Testify

Waco Bingo Hall has come under suspicion as an illegal gambling ring. On Thursday five of their long time customers testified that they had no idea that there was illegal activity going on at the hall. Their involvement in the trial stems from the cashing of checks that went on at the hall. They had cashed personal checks at the hall, and somehow those checks ended up being deposited into the personal bank accounts of Gloria Williams and Rita Tipton. The two women are currently being charged with bingo fraud, tax evasion, and mail fraud.

The witnesses said that it was commonplace to have your checks cashed at the hall, and that you could even bring your paycheck and they would cash that for you as well. They did admit that many times in their hurry to get back to the game that they did not fill in the “pay to the order of” line, but that the hall had a stamp that they would use to fill that line in anyway, so they didn’t worry about it. However, those checks that were not filled in or stamped seem to have ended up in the personal accounts of the defendants.

Upon examination of the checks, one of the witnesses noticed that the “pay to the order of” line had been filled in with the word cash, but that it was not their handwriting, and did not know why the defendant would have cashed that check. The check was endorsed by Williams, but the witness said they have no idea why it would have been endorsed by Williams and not by the casino. None of the witnesses had any reason to think that their checks were not being cashed and deposited by the bingo hall.
