Culture and Tourism ScoldedThe Culture and Tourism Ministry is in trouble from the Prime Minister, and has taken a verbal beating. Prime Minister Han Myeong-sook criticized them this week for “poor management of the arcade gambling business.” She had come for a visit to get a briefing to see what the status was, and found that she was quite unhappy with the way it had all played out. “I’m so disappointed by the way that the ministry has dealt with gambling game machines,’’ Han told Minister Kim Myung-gon. “And I'd like to apologize for raising concerns to the people.’’ Minister Kim Myung-gon stated that he will root out the big slot machine games such as Sea Story that have generated such criticism as of late. They are available throughout the country, but are illegal in many ways. Kim said, he thought that come next year they would be able to root out much of the illegal activity once their licenses start expiring. “All the problematic gambling games’ licensing will expire by next April, and they will have to be re-rated or re-approved. We will apply stricter measures then and we will root them all out,’’ Kim said. Kim plans on putting several blocks in place to remove the temptation of illegal slot machine gambling, as well as making sure that those that are currently operating illegally will be eliminated, and no more will be allowed to open.
