Gale Blows Gambling Off BallotAttorney General Jon Bruning said earlier this week that gambling should be on the ballot, and that he would allow a form of gambling that is not authorized in the state’s constitution. He would also allow for the expansion of gambling as well. This is a huge step for the state, as many are opposed to the slot machine gambling coming in. Secretary of State John Gale responded that he would not allow casino gambling on the November ballot. He said that he would allow the approval of video keno, but that the casino measure is violating the state’s constitutions limit that you cannot submit similar ballot proposals more than once every three years. As Nebraskans have already voted down two other proposals for slot machines to come into the state, he felt that this was a direct violation of that rule. There are some differences between the proposals, but basically they are the same. "The essential substance, the heart of the matter is the same, and on that basis, we've determined, within my authority, not to permit it on the ballot," Gale said. The organizers of the casino petition are not giving up hope. Greg Lemon said he would continue to work towards getting the slot machine initiative on the November ballot. “The secretary of state and the attorney general are taking a little broader interpretation of what the same measure and form of substance than we do, and it looks like we'll probably have a court decide who is correct," Lemon said.
